Transit rates are inequitable

To the editor:About two months ago I had the pleasure of discussing the Cape County Transit Authority's funding request with Mayor Jay Knudtson. Now that request has become a reality. The transit authority wants us to believe there will possibly be 90,000 riders. How many residents live in Cape Girardeau and Jackson combined?

First, the transit authority will receive the funds regardless of its reasons or pleas for assistance. Second, a taxi service needs dependable transportation specialists or drivers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which includes Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Finally, the rate difference is terrible. The cost for a rider in Jackson who is traveling anywhere within the city limits is $3. However, if the rider is traveling to Cape Girardeau the cost is $11. A ride from my house in Cape to the Wal-Mart on William Street in Cape one way is $6.50. Most Cape rides within the city limits start at $5.

Does anyone else want to ride?
