Beware of Scott City phone-tax issue

To the editor:

The special election on Tuesday is an attempt by Scott City officials to impose a tax increase on everyone who uses any telecommunications service. That includes your wire-line phone, cell phone or pager. The poorly worded language of the ballot issue would lead the casual reader to believe that the tax will only be applied to the businesses providing the telecommunications services. The facts are simple. The tax, if passed, will be paid by the citizens of Scott City. This proposed telecommunications tax will show up on our monthly telephone statements. I think it is important that Scott City voters make an informed choice about this tax and understand that we will be the ones to bear the ultimate burden.
