Jackson chamber hands out honors

It is appropriate that the fastest growing town in Southeast Missouri should take an evening to honor the people and businesses that are making Jackson so successful.

This week, members of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce came together to hand out recognition. Those on the receiving end were:

Arnold Strickert, who received the R.A. Fulenwider Meritorious Community Service Award. He served in the Navy during World War II, is a 50-year member of both the American Legion and the Optimist Club, is a past president of the chamber of commerce and the Jackson Industrial Development Board and is an active member and leader in St. Paul Lutheran Church and other organizations.

Wal-Mart, named Business of the Year. The store came to Jackson in 1975 and today supports the chamber's Educator of the Year program and the golf tournament and makes contributions to the parks, police, fire and sheriff's departments.

American Railcar Industries, named Industry of the Year. ARI opened in Jackson in 1985 and has made contributions to the police and fire departments, the Boy and Girl Scouts, Teen Challenge, 4-H, the school district and FFA.

Congratulations to all the winners. Along with many other fine individuals, businesses and industries, they help make Jackson the great community it is.
