Stung

Last week in Jackson, police mounted a sting operation that lured people with felony warrants with the false promise of money. Those sought by police streamed into Jackson last week seeking checks from a sweepstakes that was a concoction of a sting operation that netted 23 arrests.

Officers from four Southeast Missouri counties participated in the operation called "lam scam." Five hundred people were sent the letters promising prizes. Fifty of them called to make an appointment to get a check. Sixteen of those had either paid their bond or were already arrested before the sting began.

Police can't run an operation like this very often because people trying to avoid arrest would get wise to it. At least some of them would.
