Jackson, Poplar Bluff lead field for annual HealthSouth Classic

The top high school girls basketball talent in Southeast Missouri will be on display when the seventh annual HealthSouth Holiday Classic tips off today at the Show Me Center.
The eight-team, three-day tournament begins at 4 p.m. when top-seeded Jackson (5-1) plays No. 8 Sparta (Ill.). The game will be followed by No. 4 Central (3-3) and No. 5 Farmington (5-3) at 5:30; No. 2 Poplar Bluff (4-2) and No. 7 Perryville (4-1) at 7; and defending champion and third-seeded Notre Dame (1-4) and No. 6 Dexter (5-0) at 8:30.
The semifinals will be Thursday and the championship at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Admission is $3 for ages 6 and above. Children under 6 are admitted free.
St. Vincent 44, Arcadia Valley 37
St. Vincent jumped ahead by 11 at haltime and fought through a sloppy second- half performance to win at home.
Allison Prost led the Squaws (4-3) with 14 points.
Eagle Ridge 40, New Salem 28
Rachael Carbaugh and Autumn Crowden each had 12 points to lead Eagle Ridge (3-3) in a win. Cara Ervin had 10 rebounds.
Sarah Green's 12 points led New Salem.
Oran 80, East Prairie 55
Oran got 24 points from Nathan Seyer to lead a Scott-Mississippi Conference win.
Tyler Cookson added 13, Patrick Friga added 10 and Ryan Bouge contributed 11.
Scott City 74, Malden 70
Scott City remained undefeated with a road win over Malden.
Tyler Ward scored 24 for the Rams, who improved to 4-0. Andy Beck added 11 and D.J. Walton had 14 for Scott City.
Meadow Heights 76, Delta 68
Freshman Terry Wagner scored 20 for Meadow Heights as the Panthers defeated Delta. Brad Adams had 17 and Josh Fulton and Heath Fulton each added 14 for Meadow Heights (4-1).
Joey Keys led all scorers with 25 for Delta (1-3). Derek Helderman and Bret Menz each had 16 for the Bobcats.
Meadow Heights' leading scorers -- Joey Bell and Chris Burr, who combine for nearly 50 points a game -- were suspended for Tuesday night's game but will return to the lineup Thursday.
Bell City 79, Leopold 37
Bell City had no trouble in a one-sided outcome on the road. Eric Henry scored 24 for the Cubs.
Bell City (4-1) jumped to a big lead early and led 20-4 after the first quarter. Dominitrix Johnson scored 22.
Leopold fell to 1-5.
St.Vincent 59, North County 53
St. Vincent was led by Matt Wengert's 22 points in a win over the Raiders. The Indians used 24 fourth-quarter points to improve to 1-1.
Alex Armbruster added 14 for St. Vincent.
Eagle Ridge 40, New Salem 36
Andrew Mellies scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds for Eagle Ridge (3-4). T.J Crowden added six points and Joel Powell had 5 steals for the Eagles.
Andrew Conway led New Salem with 11.
Bernie 62, Woodland 61
Woodland put together a big fourth-quarter comeback but fell short at home against Bernie.
Alex VanGennip led the way with 15 points for the Cardinals (3-3). Luke Johnson had 13 and Travis Benfield added 12 for Woodland.
Fredericktown 77, Perryville 64
Perryville kept it close in the first half, but couldn't keep pace with Fredericktown in the second half and fell at home.
Kyle Dobbelare and Eric Weibrecht each had 11 to lead the Pirates (1-2).
Jackson 61, Saxony Lutheran 54
Saxony (3-4) was led by Lauren Lueders with 18 points. Casey Petzoldt contributed 13 and Trey Maevers added 11.
Jackson improved to 6-0 with its win.
