Tools for Teachers project gets supplies

Even before the first day of school, most area teachers reach for their checkbooks.

Yes, the school district gives them money for supplies, and the Parent-Teacher Organizations give what they can. But sometimes it just isn't enough, particularly for teachers who want their students to have every advantage.

And while students may start the year with what they need, not all parents are in the financial situation to keep buying school supplies as the school year progresses.

That's where Tools for Teachers comes in. Coordinated by Cheryl Ellis, editor of the Southeast Missourian Jr., the program is aimed at collecting school supplies and donations for teachers in Cape Girardeau, Scott, Perry and Bollinger counties. Last year, the first for this special effort, 20 classrooms in those counties received vast quantities of supplies.

Boxes were set out at various locations around town, and the deadline to drop off supplies was Wednesday. But monetary donations (make out checks to Tools for Teachers) still would be greatly appreciated. Ellis is collecting them at 301 Broadway or by mail at P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701-0699.

Anyone who believes teachers play a major role in our children's lives should feel compelled to help.
