MoDOT will seek funding options for transportation

To the editor:

I would like to thank the Southeast Missourian for its support of Proposition B. I know it was difficult to favor a tax increase. Yet you recognized that "good highways are vital to this state" and that to "keep what we have in good repair as well as adding major projects" will require new funding sources.

You challenged readers to come up with ideas on how to meet Missouri's transportation needs. At the Missouri Department of Transportation, we also want to encourage Missourians to be part of the decision-making process.

I'm disappointed the measure didn't pass, but I respect the opinion of the voters. The need for increased investment remains. MoDOT will work with the legislature to explore funding options that might be more agreeable to Missouri's citizens. In the meantime, we will concentrate on maintaining existing transportation assets.

Missourians deserve a better system of highways, transit, waterways, railroads and bicycle and pedestrian lanes than currently exists. I pledge I will work to find a way to give it to them. I hope you will continue to keep your readers informed of our progress.
