Water-district vote affects part of the county

The only local tax issue in Cape Girardeau County on Tuesday's ballot is a $550,000 revenue bond issue that would provide startup financing for Public Water Supply District No. 5 serving the Nell Holcomb and Egypt Mills areas north of Cape Girardeau.

This issue is important to residents of that area for several reasons. Most important is providing a source of good water as more and more individual wells go bad. In addition, the district's water lines would provide a source of water to refill tanks used by the East County Fire District when it makes calls.

Voters in the affected area voted last year to form the district. Now the district's board is seeking approval of revenue bonds that would be used to start construction and seek grants or loans to pay the overall cost of about $2 million.

Good water and an ample supply are vital to any area. Voters in this water district surely will see the need for voting yes.
