Briefly

Baseball

  • The Royals have agreed to terms with right-hander Zack Greinke, their first-round draft pick. Greinke, 18, who was 9-2 with an 0.55 ERA in 12 games at Apopka (Fla.) High School, this year, will report to the Royals' Gulf Coast League team Monday.

The Devil Rays placed infielder Russ Johnson on the restricted list and activated pitcher Ryan Rupe from the 15-day disabled list.

    Basketball

  • First-round draft choice Juan Dixon signed a contract Thursday with the Wizards. Dixon, the 17th overall selection in last month's NBA draft, approved a deal that will pay him $3.15 million over three years.

The Rockets signed their second first-round draft pick, Slovenian forward Bostjan Nachbar, to a multimillion dollar contract.

    Tennis

  • Second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero was upset by David Sanchez 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Swiss Open.

Top seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Community Championships, easing past Gala Leon Garcia 6-2, 6-3. Second seed Barbara Schett defeated Libuse Prusova 6-4, 6-0.

    So that's why she lost?

Anna Kournikova and her boyfriend, singer Enrique Iglesias, had a lively -- if not raunchy -- night before she lost a Wimbledon doubles match Saturday, the New York Post reported this week.

In fact, London tabloids said that the "moaning and screams" were so loud in their hotel room that managers "had to send someone up to their room to tell them to keep it down."

    Verbatim

Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post: "This just in. The Yankees, in an attempt to further bolster their pennant hopes, have acquired the Tampa Bay Devil Rays."
