Conrad leads CapeLegion to district baseball win

The Cape Girardeau American Legion (14-13) baseball team defeated Charleston 7-3 for a district win Monday.

Matt Wulfers pitched a complete game and struck out 14.

Chris Conrad went 3-for-5 including an inside-the-park home run and a triple. Jeff Brosey was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double with two runs scored and two RBIs. Tyler Schlosser was also 2-for-4 with a triple and a single.

Cape will play Stoddard County today at Capaha Field. The game was switched from Saturday because of field conflicts.

Cape Junior Legion takes pair at Ballard County

LA CENTER, Ky. -- The Cape Girardeau Junior Legion finished its regular season at 32-14 after it swept Ballard County (Ky.) on Monday, winning 5-1 and 10-4.

In the opener, Jake Welch took the win and Matt Hellrich the save. Lee Essner was 3-for-4.

Blake Urhahn won the second game with five hits and 13 strikeouts. Sean Bard was 3-for-5 with a double and three-run homer; Helrich and Steve Miinch each had two hits.

Cape kicks off the five-team district tournament Thursday at Jackson, Mo.

Standridge leads ATPR sprints to break dry spell

BENTON, Mo. -- Defending points champion Robbie Standridge of Springfield, Ill., won late Saturday for the first time since July 31 in the sprint division feature at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark. Standridge passed leader Todd Rowland early, then controlled the final 24 laps for the win.

Rowland finished second. Jimmy Kite was third.

Chris Hall of Sikeston, Mo., won for the third straight win in modifieds. Shane Moody was second and early leader Terry Johnson third.

Dietrich Bollinger of Benton topped the pure street class for the second week in a row. Danny Sissom was second and Jeff Beeson third.

Garrett Moll and Wesley Short of Scott City, Mo., won in the cruiser class.

Elfrink on two winning horseshoe teams

Tyler Elfrink and Carl Reddick won the SEMO Horsehoe Association event Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold, Mo. Ron LeGrand and Melody Williams were second; Cori Stoverink and Danny Williams were third.

On Saturday, Elfrink teamed with Edgar Stoverink to win the group's event at the Backyard Horseshoe Club in Glenallen, Mo. Second was Irv Vandeven and Cori Stoverink. Rose Kern and Joe Lucas were third.

Vandeven and Cori Stoverink won the event Thursday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran, Mo. Herman Campbell and Darren "Beaver" Glastetter were second; Beth McClain and LaChelle Cook were third.

Heartland Travelers fourth in ASA state tournament

The Heartland Travelers softball team finished fourth Sunday in the ASA state tournament for Class A fast-pitch softball teams at Shawnee Sports Complex.

The Travelers lost 1-0 to the Trojanettes Red team of Kansas City in the third-place game Sunday. Sixteen teams were in the event.

They opened with a 4-0 loss to the Columbia Rattlers, which won the event. On Saturday the Travelers lost 3-0 to the Carrollton Kicks, but came back with wins in the consolation bracket -- 6-0 over the Jackson Hurricanes, 3-0 over the Renegades of St. Clair, and 2-1 over the SEMO Magic of Kelso. The Travelers finished Saturday with a 2-1 win over Carrollton.

Ben Proffer, Terry Schnurbusch and Amy O'Brien coach the team.
