Dr. C. John Ritter, 65, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at St. Louis University Hospital.
He was born June 5, 1937, at Cape Girardeau, the son of Clarence J. "Brick" Ritter and Mabel L. Kurre Ritter. He and Donna Burkett married April 21, 1962. She died Oct. 30, 1985. He married Marcia Kay Southard on Dec. 20, 1986. She survives.
He was a 1955 graduate of Jackson High School and 1959 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University. He graduated from the University of Missouri Medical School at Columbia, Mo., in 1963.
He served his internship at the University of Iowa and his residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri at Columbia.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Army while stationed at Yokohama, Japan, from 1967 to 1969. After his Army service, he returned to Cape Girardeau where he worked in private practice until 1998, when he retired to do volunteer medical missionary work in Third World countries.
He also is survived by three sons, Stephen Ray Southard, John Benjamin Ritter and Daniel Ray Southard, all of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Robin Hackett of Kansas City, Mo., and Emilie Clardy of Jackson; a sister Mary Sue Niemann of Jackson; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau and after 12:30 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Hobbs Chapel Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, with graveside military honors.
