Bernal Clayton Murphy, 93, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Ratliff Care Center.

Born Feb. 16, 1909, in Bloomfield, Mo., he was the son of Charles Clifford Murphy and Bertha Katherine McGee.

Murphy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, and worked there as a custodian for 19 years, retiring in 1973.

He had also worked at the Baptist home in Ironton, Mo.; was later a clerk at the ration board in Bloomfield, Mo.; and worked for the Nichols Transfer and Storage in Cape Girardeau.

He had attended Will Mayfield College in Marble Hill., Mo.

On Aug. 24, 1932 in Bonne Terre, Mo., he was married to Beulah I. "Boots" Covingon. She died Jan. 23, 1994.

Survivors include one son, Lon James Murphy and wife Victoria of Shreveport, La.; three daughters, Betty Joe Pender and husband Howard of Scott City, Mo., Mary C. Murphy of Cape Girardeau, Jacqueline C. Green and husband Barney of Bloomfield, Mo.; and one brother, Robert Murphy of Memphis; 12 grandchildren, James L. Pender, Barry L. Pender, Jean M. Diemund, Allen R. Pender, Sonya M. Stubbs, Jon S. Harris, V. Tod Harris, James L. Murphy, Richard T. Murphy, Michael J. Huey, Charles Clayton Huey and Timothy W. Huey.

Also surviving are 21 great-grandchildren: Aaron Pender, Brian Pender, Chad Pender, Kyle Pender, Loney Pender, M. Melissa Deimund, Nicholas Deimund, Christa Stubbs, Felicia Harris, Scot Harris, Adrian Harris, Michelle Murphy, Megan Murphy, Bethany Murphy, Colby Murphy, Tyler Murphy, Trae Huey, Burton Huey, Timothy D. Huey, Elijah M. Huey, Matthew Clayton Huey.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., today at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Revs. Roy Jones, Jim Matthews and Bob Wiggins officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lon J. Murphy, James L. Pender, Barry L. Pender, Allen R. Pender, Charles Clayton Huey, Timothy W. Huey, Burton C. Huey and Trae Clifford Huey.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Home in Ironton.
