Pay for the Pup ends successful campaign

With more than $16,000 in hand, the Pay for the Pup fund-raising campaign by the Southeast Missourian Jr. has guaranteed there will be enough money for a new police dog at the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The need for a new dog arose unexpectedly this year when Jupp, the department's veteran canine, developed health problems that forced his retirement. While money had been budgeted for continuing police-dog upkeep, there was no money for a new dog.

The Southeast Missourian Jr. is a monthly newspaper that is for and by youngsters who love animals and respect police officers. The idea for the young readers' newspaper to raise money for a new police dog was a perfect match.

There were several general donors who gave large amounts, including the local carpenters union, the SEMO Greek Week Committee, the Jaycees, the VFW and the semissourian.com Web site, all of which donated more than $1,000 apiece.

Thanks to this outpouring of generosity, a new dog has been ordered. This is just another example of how community support produces good results when there is a real need.
