McDonald County to get Wal-Mart distribution center

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is to build a 50,000-square-foot office building in McDonald County in southwestern Missouri, officials said. McDonald County is one of the few counties in the region without a Wal-Mart store.
The giant retailer's headquarters is just to the south, in Bentonville, Ark.
The Missouri office will serve as an internal distribution center and will handle the technological hardware, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
The department announced earlier this month that McDonald County had been awarded a $650,000 grant for water and sewer improvements for the new Wal-Mart facilities. The grant includes $155,000 in business facility tax credits and $500,000 in development tax credits, the department said.
Gene Hall, McDonald County circuit clerk and recorder and chairman of the local economic development commission, said the development could include retail. The site includes about 180 acres, just north of Bella Vista, Ark., he said. Wal-Mart did not return calls for comment Friday. The company acknowledged last fall it was considering the area for an office.
