WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- Lewis Smith, 87, of Wolf Lake died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Jonesboro Health Care Center.
He was born Feb. 4, 1915, at Wolf Lake Ill., son of Rolla and Gertie Wilson Smith.
He and Annie Sims were married Oct. 20, 1934, in Jonesboro, Ill.
Smith helped create the Mississippi River levee in the 1940s, which was the beginning of his career in construction. He later worked for many years at the Union County highway department as a road commissioner and laborer. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 318.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Louise Smith and Irene Stamp of Wolf Lake; two sisters, Ailene Wilson of Baldwin, Mo. and Pauline Glasco of Caseyville, Ill.; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Jim Galbraith and Jim Stamp officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.
