SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN (AP)-- U.S. Marines fired mortar rounds Thursday and their base went on alert in response to what a military spokesman said was a threat to their installation in southern Afghanistan.

The spokesman, Captain David T. Romley, said "it appears to be a credible threat" to the camp.

He said he believed aircraft at the base had been scrambled into the air.
