Postal union fights to ensure level of service

To the editor:

I've heard much bashing along with good support of organized labor in the past weeks. I'm a very proud employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Cape Girardeau and a very proud member of the American Postal Workers Union AFL-CIO. You hear the postmaster general state that the Postal Service employees are doing a great job and he appreciates the steadfast performance of our work through these troubled times. We do this job and do it well because it is our privilege and sworn duty. The APWU has continued to do the job well and has done so without a contract since November 2000. Through all this talk of appreciation and praise, the Postal Service refuses to agree to a contract which doesn't strip away a large part of health benefits, cost-of-living raises and paid vacation, which most all other companies enjoy. Our union also represents our customers, fighting to ensure that the service we provide today will be there tomorrow.
