POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A Poplar Bluff man is recovering after he was attacked by two pit bulls Friday afternoon.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a 65-year-old man was attacked at about 2 p.m. when he tried to stop the dogs from attacking his miniature pinschers.

Patrolmen J.R. Keirsey and Steve McCane responded to the call.

Keirsey said when he arrived, he saw the victim had several cuts and bites on his left leg and arm. Kiersey went to the back of the house, where the dogs were last seen.

The pit bulls charged. Kiersey fired two shots, and the dogs fled.

One pit bull was found dead underneath the house where it lived at 311 N. C St. Police were unable to find the other dog.

Keirsey said the victim was treated and released from Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus' emergency room.
