"Jack-of-all-trades" home repairmen, once a staple of almost every neighborhood, are rare these days.

But not here, now that the "House Doctor" is on call.

House Doctor is a new business available to handle a variety of chores around the house, ranging from a drippy faucet to shelving installation.

"We'll come out and change a light bulb or hang a picture," said Rick Hetzel, owner of the newest House Doctor franchise in Missouri.

"Our people are trained in a number of installation and/or repair jobs," said Hetzel, whose House Doctor's Handyman Services are located at 2711 Thomas Drive in Cape Girardeau.

"These are jobs that home owners could do, but just don't have the time to complete," said Hetzel.

The handyman business is growing, minor home repairs add up to big business. More than $42 billion are spent each year in minor home repairs.

Homeowners are always looking to reduce the cost of maintaining their home.

House Doctor, which was founded in 1994, now has more than 200 locations in 43 states and offers help on a lengthy list of repairs.

Now homeowners don't have to call several craftsmen to do separate jobs, said Hetzel. "Our handymen can do everything quickly and effectively."

House Doctor also offers free estimates.

A number of work and chores on the handyman list included work on storm doors, garage openers, remodeling projects, drywall and tile installation or repair, window treatment, weathering stripping and many more.
