Letter to the Editor

Blunt sensitive to concerns over his mobilization

To the editor:

As a statewide elected officeholder as well as a Navy reservist called to active duty, Secretary of State Matt Blunt realizes his situation is unique. The Missouri Constitution requires Blunt to hold his office unless he resigns or is impeached. Case law holds that the secretary of state is entitled to a salary even when absent from Missouri. While Blunt continues to be responsible for the office, he is sensitive to concerns that may arise as a result of his mobilization.

Blunt plans to remain in close communication with his staff. Blunt will make any decisions that impacts the focus of his office or the allocation of staff or resources. Missouri taxpayers will not pay the additional communication expenses incurred as a result of his military deployment. Blunt will pay them out of his own pocket. Moreover, he has decided to donate his military salary, minus any expenses incurred as a result of his military service, to charity.

Blunt understands the strain, both economic and otherwise, that the activation of reservists and National Guard members places on families. Some public and private employers are providing the necessary pay to fill any gap between their employees' military and civilian pay. Blunt fully supports and encourages these types of efforts.

In these uncertain times, it is important that our state government provide continuity and stability. While on active duty, Blunt remains responsible and accountable to the people of Missouri for the conduct of his office. He is certain his staff will continue to provide high-quality services that Missourians have come to expect.
