LETTERS: TRADE IMBALANCES SEND MESSAGE

To the editor:

For those of you who were brave enough to read my last letter, here's some more little-talked-about information. In 1991 when Bill Clinton was just a candidate for the office he now disgraces, our trade deficit with China stood at $12.7 billion. Now, our trade deficit with China is at a whopping $49.7 billion. Why are we trading so freely with a communist country? Campaign contributions? Rice.

One of the other great things Clinton has done for the American people is NAFTA. America now has a $14.5 billion trade deficit with Mexico. With all the trouble at the Mena Airport, I would be a little more than concerned about this deficit. All is not lost yet. The United Steelworkers of America are going to court. They contend NAFTA is not constitutional. They also maintain that NAFTA has cost Americans at least 400,000 jobs. Perot tried to warn us about NAFTA. Now it's time to listen. The list goes on. Japan enjoys $56.1 billion, Canada $16.4 billion, Germany $18.7 billion. These are just the figures for a few countries. Wouldn't it be nice if we could save the jobs lost by these trade deficits? If you are tired of our jobs going to other countries, illegal campaign contributions and low moral ethics in the White House, now is the time to stand up and make your voice heard, complain to your legislators in Washington and vote. The deadline for voter registration is Oct. 7. Let's throw the rascals out. CAROL POOLE
