THE PUBLIC MIND: READER COMMENTS ON CUTTING TREES AND LEVELING FARMS

To the Editor:

I am in complete agreement with the sentiments expressed in the letter from George Ann Huck of Commerce published in the Southeast Missourian recently. Her letter referred to the trees which have been cut down next to the Veterans Home.

To this I would like to add my displeasure with the billboards placed along I-55 and recently at Fruitland which disfigure our beautiful countryside. The action which filled me with the most sorrow was the leveling of the picturesque farm at Fruitland to erect a D-Mart and a mobile home dealership at I-55 and Highway 61. What an eyesore Fruitland already has three gas station and this developer could surely have been intelligent enough to devise another way to make money from the farm without perpetrating this mutilation.

Functional, productive, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sound businesses will be replaced with unsightly service enterprises of highly questionable functionality and necessity.
