LETTER: AARP ENDORSEMENT IS REASON TO QUIT; THERE ARE OTHER GROUPS

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

To the editor:

Recently I wrote to the president of the AARP regarding the organization's stand on health care. I really did not expect to receive an answer as it obvious that he or his board suffer from arrogance and total disregard for the opinions of their membership.

So I was pleased that you published his answer in the paper under the title "AARP president responds." I will now proceed to disassociate myself from AARP and, while I can only speak and act for myself, I would hope many, if not all, members would do likewise.

The board needs a message only the absence of premiums can send.

AARP is not the only game in town. There are many good programs available. I intend to find one that is not in bed with the Mitchell/Gephardt bills.

Incidentally, health reform will not be dead for years. It is, of course, a vital concern for all of us. There will be another time, another congress, another administration (hopefully persons of more considered judgment). And the problem needs to be addressed rationally -- not in this atmosphere of desperation to get a bill passed -- any bill -- right now.
