LETTERS: SELF-FULFILLING WORDS HAUNT CLINTON

To the editor:

Who said it?

"Yes, the president should resign. He has lied to the American people time after time and again betrayed their trust. He is no longer an effective leader. Since he has admitted guilt, there is no reason to put the American people through an impeachment. He will serve absolutely no purpose in finishing out his term. The only possible solution if for the president to save some dignity and resign."

Who said it? William Jefferson Clinton in 1974 regarding President Richard M. Nixon. Can you find a more self-fulfilling prophecy? He has really spelled out his own situation before the American people today. He has to follow his own advice and resign for the good of the country, which he has never considered before and probably is not going to now.

He hypocritically cannot relate the sense of shame, loss of dignity, weakened honor and trustworthiness and potential destruction of our judicial system between 1974 and 1998. But he should and would if he possessed any of the foregoing traits.
