To the editor:

This letter is to the parents, students, teachers and citizens of the Jackson School District. I would like to thank each and every one who participated in the election of April 4. I am very honored to be chosen to represent the district as a new school board member.

Currently, the Board of Education has many issues before it. Re-addressing the expansion within the district will probably be at the forefront of the agenda. The board has set a planning meeting for 6:30 p.m. today in the administration building on East Adams here in Jackson. This meeting is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. I am interested in hearing multiple viewpoints on the topic of expansion so the district can explore various options and not be restricted in future growth. I hope this will not be a meeting to tell who did or didn't vote for or against the proposal on April 4, but an opportunity for those people who feel they strongly want a voice in the direction of their district. Please make an effort to attend.

I am learning more about our district every day. I have heard from several individuals in the community who want to continue the long-standing tradition of excellence in Jackson schools. I enjoy talking with all patrons of the district and encourage open discussions about continuing improvements we might make.

The board's recent adoption of stricter eligibility requirements for extracurricular activities is, I hope, a reflection of a community that holds its students to a higher standard than the minimum guidelines. But we also realize that the policy is a work in progress, and will need to be re-evaluated periodically.

Although I am but one voice on the seven-member school board, I am excited about the opportunities and challenges that face the district. I appreciate the daily support and enthusiasm from those I see or talk to. I thank you for the faith and belief that you have placed in me. I look forward to seeing and talking with you tonight.
