To the editor:

This letter is in response to recent allegations relating to the alleged abuse of a 12-year-old boy by Eric and Jennifer Schwepker.

I was visiting in December 1993 when the boy returned from visiting his father. I noticed scratches on his body and marks on his neck. A social worker from the Missouri Department of Social Services was contacted.

In April 1996, the maternal grandmother filed a child-abuse report with the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department. On numerous occasions the authorities were notified of abuse to the child. We felt the boy was being punished even more severely when the authorities were notified.

Far too often, we read about children who are returned to abusive homes. Now is the time to ensure this victim will have his second chance. Our hope is that this boy doesn't become another number in a very unfortunate total. This may be the last opportunity for individuals to stand up for this abused child. Our hope and prayers are that the judicial system will not let this little boy down. The courts must protect the victim and severely penalize the abusers.
