A (YAWN) BASEBALL STRIKE

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

What? Another threatened baseball strike? Maybe that is good news for some fans who are tired of seeing their favorite team lose. But for diehard hardball fanatics, a strike is the dumbest thing that could happen.

Of course, owners of baseball clubs and players see it differently. To them, the potential strike is an outgrowth of growing labor-management acrimony that has worsened in recent years. Millions of dollars are at stake, so the threat of a strike has to be taken seriously.

But what about fans of teams that are doing well? The Kansas City Royals have been on a winning streak that makes supporters of that team excited and happy. A strike now could leave the team cold and put an end to a wonderful season.

One of these days, everyone -- owners, players and fans -- may tire of the big-business aspects of America's pastime. Fans may turn to purer forms of the game. They may find it in teams like Cape Girardeau's own Capahas. Just imagine: a new baseball stadium right here in River City. It is possible, you know.
