Last week the city of Cape Girardeau bid farewell to J. Ronald Fischer as its city manager. He served this city admirably during the past seven years. Fischer leaves big shoes to fill.

He brought a plain-speaking, commonsense approach to the job. He mended fences that were fractured during the previous administration. Much of his early time was spent as peacemaker. He excelled at compromise and calm deliberation. He not only got the job done, he got it done well.

In all, he served three decades in Cape Girardeau city and county government. He was Cape Girardeau's fourth city manager in 30 years, and the only one who previously served as a councilman and mayor. He also served 20 years as a county commissioner.

Cape Girardeau is a better place for the years of service by J. Ronald Fischer.
