KEEP TWO-WAY ON BROADWAY

At a recent hearing on improvements planned for a portion of Broadway near its western end, the idea of making the thoroughfare one way surfaced again.

This is old hat. A one-way street system was tried several years ago, and it was such a disastrous failure that two-way traffic was restored to the narrow streets.

The city's current plans for Broadway have been in the making for months. Numerous hearings were held prior to a successful vote on a city sales tax to pay for a number of specific street improvements, including the Broadway project.

The results of those hearings were clear: Widen Broadway, but keep the traffic flow two way for the benefit of the many businesses that still flourish along the street that extends all the way from Kingshighway to the riverfront.

Accordingly, the project has been planned to accomplish improved -- and safer -- traffic flow between Clark and Perry avenues. In addition, the project will upgrade traffic signals and improve stormwater runoff.

The idea of one-way traffic on such an important street is one that won't work. The plan that has been developed, based on the public's input, should be implemented.
