ADVANCE BAND PROMOTES PRIDE

Something remarkable is going on at Advance High School in nearby Stoddard County. The high school band has attracted almost unprecedented participation. About 90 students participate out of 150 total students. That is an amazing statistic.

The numbers are certainly a credit to Advance band director Bob Moses. When he started directing a decade ago, there were 45 members. Two years ago, 115 students had enrolled in the band class.

But Moses credits community support for the band's success and numbers. When the band needed new marching uniforms five years ago, the booster club raised the needed $30,000. Community support of the schools extends beyond the band. Last April, the community passed an $800,000 bond issue for a new school building with 95 percent voter support.

Many smaller schools with smaller bands have a hard time competing. Not so in Advance. The band has earned an impressive number of trophies and awards.

The band represents a team effort that promotes both school and community pride. The program is a credit to the town, the school and the people of Advance.
