Scott City and Dexter can be proud that a resident is each of those towns were recognized recently with Community Betterment adult leadership awards.

The awards went to Brenda Moyers of Scott City and Mary Ann Taylor of Dexter. Moyers for 22 years has volunteered for and participated in countless civic projects. Taylor's civic efforts over the years include everything from serving on the board of the senior center to chairing the city's parks and recreation board.

Only 10 adult leadership awards, which honor people for their volunteerism, were presented statewide by the Missouri Community Betterment Association at its annual conference recently. Awards also went to cities for outstanding achievements. They included Malden, Perryville, Dexter, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff, all with populations under 20,000, which the Missouri Community Betterment program recognizes.

The program is a healthy one that helps promote civic pride among those who take advantage of entering the annual Economic Development Department-sponsored competitions. Those who compete are better off for it.

Congratulations to the winners.
