Vision 2000 doesn't plan to become outdated with the new millennium. Instead, the organization is looking to update its name to Vision 2020.

This organization has served Cape Girardeau well as both cheerleader and activist. From hosting community information sessions to planting flowers along major thoroughfares, Vision 2000 has quietly and patiently worked behind the scenes to improve Cape Girardeau.

Vision 2000 was established in 1987 to develop a strategic plan of community visions and goals. In the past 10 years, this group has successfully worked to build community spirit, improve education and promote industry, business, jobs along with planning and zoning.

The organization has involved a number of community leaders and interested citizens. But perhaps the most visible of Vision 2000 representatives has been Councilman Melvin Gateley, who admirably promotes community spirit and pride in everything he does.

Cape Girardeau's City Council will vote at its Dec. 7 meeting on updating the Vision 2000 name. The 16-member Vision 2000 Community Relations Council is appointed by the city as one of its volunteer advisory boards.

The group works to build community involvement, a key ingredient for a thriving, progressive city. Vision 2000 has also been good about recognizing involved citizens, organizations and businesses for their contributions to make Cape Girardeau a better place to work and live.

On the eve of the millennium, planning for the future will be even more important. With a new name, Vision 2020 should be ready to build community spirit and the quality of life in the next century.
