The photograph of the cat with her kitten was as touching as any painting of Madonna and Child.

Except the cat was a surrogate mother for the kitten, which grew from the egg of a rare African wildcat that had been fertilized by sperm taken from a male of the same species.

Scientists at the Audubon Institute Center for Research of Endangered Species crowed about the feat. One even said the cat "thinks she has the ugliest baby in the word, but she takes care of it." How scientific.

If this is supposed to be the way to "resurrect" extinct species, one might wonder where scientists will find willing egg and sperm donors. Ah, science.
