HOMESCHOOLERS SEEKING BETTER EDUCATIONS

Approximately 2 percent of the nation's 50 million schoolchildren are being homeschooled by parents, a new Department of Education report says.

This represents a growing trend, up substantially from just five years ago.

Most of the children who are taught at home have well-educated parents, and most live in urban areas.

While it might be assumed that many parents choose to teach their children at home because of religious convictions, the report says that's not the case.

Most homeschoolers say they want a better education for their children than urban school systems can provide.

Indeed, homeschooling is becoming more of an option even when church-affiliated schools are available.
