RED CROSS NEEDS FINANCIAL SHOT IN THE ARM

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

The American Red Cross is undoubtedly one of the most respected charitable organizations in existence.

Its readily recognizable vans are on the scenes of natural disasters like tornados and floods, doling out food and blankets, bottled water and motel vouchers to the victims. The vans arrive at house fires, when families have lost everything and need somebody to help put their lives back together.

But the local Red Cross chapter is struggling financially, operating at its leanest, executive director Mary Burton said. Her organization is $47,500 behind in funding compared to 2000. There won't be help from the national organization. Local chapters are funded with money they raise that stays in the area.

Other wonderful organizations, like the Salvation Army and Girl Scouts, also are reporting funding shortfalls.

Yes, the economy is looking a little soft. But most Southeast Missourians aren't suffering.

Now is the time to donate to charitable organizations. That way, they will be there when we need them.
