A week to honor medical lab professionals

In April, we have the opportunity to celebrate the many contributions of a dedicated group of healthcare professionals. Since 1975, the American Society for Clinical Pathology and other organizations have promoted National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week as an opportunity for the community to learn more about how the lab serves all of us. This year, Lab Week extends from April 22-28.

Locally, clinical laboratories of Southeast Missouri Hospital, Southeast Cancer Center and other affiliated clinics depend on a team of phlebotomists, clinical laboratory scientists, and pathologists to perform over 3 million tests each year.

Producing slides that pathologists need to make accurate diagnoses is an art and a science. In addition to more than 892 years of cumulative professional experience at SoutheastHEALTH, staff and equipment are subject to a rigorous system of regular checks to ensure test results are both accurate and precise. The Southeast-affiliated laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

In addition, our joint venture with the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis gives our patients access to internationally--recognized, academic medical expertise.

Each year, there are more than 11,000 openings for laboratory professionals across the country. The Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers an excellent program in Medical Laboratory Science. If you, or someone you know, enjoys teamwork and helping others, this may be the career path you're looking for.
