WWII veterans tell their stories

The ninth session of the WWII veterans history was held Aug. 30 at the Veterans Home with three members. Shirley Young and Catherine Allison organized the group to tell their history during their time in WWII. Samuel Eugene “Gene” LaFont, 94, told about breaking his leg jumping out of plane at base at Fort Benning, Georgia. Mike Stafford, 101, served overseas in large well-known battles​ and was a witness to the destruction​​ after the bombing of Hiroshima. Stafford now lives at the Veterans Home. Carl Mayfield, 96, served time in various battles overseas and now lives in Sedgewickville, Missouri. He is from the well-known Mayfield family who started Mayfield College. Dr. Frank Nickell interviewed the men about their WWII experiences. These records will be stored at Kent Library and in Washington, D.C.
