2016 Cape Girardeau County 4-H Achievement Day and County Fair

4-H Projects on display

Cape Girardeau County 4-Her’s ages 5 to 18 exhibited their non-animal projects on Saturday, June 18, at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Office during the 4-H County Fair. On Friday night, 4-Her’s had the opportunity to talk with a judge about their projects and discuss what they learned. This process is called conference judging. Exhibits ranged from cake decorating, foods, woodworking, arts and crafts, sewing, and shooting sports were on display. Best of Show winners were selected as well as Missouri State Fair exhibits. Best of Show winners were: Arts and Crafts – Lauren McClanahan, Cake Decorating – Lauren McClanahan, Clothing – Maggie Howe, Dairy – Dylan Muench, Breads – Sophie Dowdy, Photography – Mackenzie Robinson, Welding – Spencer Lorenz, and Woodworking – Elijah Dowdy. Youth who had projects selected for display at the Missouri State Fair August 11-21 in addition to the Best of Show winners were: Anna Ahrens, Hannah Aufdenberg, Austin Bodenstein, Lauren Crutsinger, Morgan Crutsinger, Sophie Dowdy, Maggie Howe, Emily Kirby, Timothy Kirby, Clayton Kirchdoerfer, Ashtin Koerber, Lauren McClanahan, Dylan Muench, Taylor Muench, Braden Rhodes, Mackenzie Robinson, Savannah Rolfing, Bailey Underwood, Natneal Underwood and Noah Underwood.

Fashion Revue was held Friday, June 17. Members enrolled in sewing, knitting and crochet are eligible to compete. The members model the clothing items they make for the judges and discuss the merits of the item. Winners are eligible to compete at the State Fashion Revue Contest October 8 in Columbia. Winners were Anna Ahrens, junior division, Emily Kirby, intermediate division, and Maggie Howe, senior division. Clothes you buy winner was Juliana Kirby, junior division.

Achievement Day was held on Saturday, June 18 at the Extension Office. 4-H members participated in public speaking, personal development, and gave demonstrations. Demonstrations consist of the members showing others a skill they have learned from their project work. Blue ribbon demonstrators are eligible to give their demonstration at the Missouri State Fair in the 4-H Building. Public speaking winners are eligible to compete at the State Contest September 10 in Columbia. Personal development allows the youth to tell the judges about themselves, projects and interests. This year hands on activities were available during the contests. Activities included: Soda bottle flowers led by Teresa Meier, Beekeeping by Grant Gillard, Honeybee Challenge by Morgan Crutsinger, Entomology by Trenton Beard and Anthony Ohmes, and Pollination by Donna Aufdenberg.

Top demonstrations were given by Josey Meier and Anna Ahrens, junior division, Abby King, intermediate division, and Dylan Muench, senior division. Personal development winners were Timothy Kirby, junior division and Nathan Aufdenberg, senior division. Prepared public speaking winners were Anna Ahrens, junior division, Emily Kirby, intermediate division, and Renee Peters, senior division. Extemporaneous winners were Timothy Kirby, intermediate division and Hannah Aufdenberg, senior division.
