Walk for Women benefits student athletes

Southeast Missouri State University's Walk for Women, which takes place Saturday, provides much-needed finances for the student-athlete scholarship fund.

Southeast women athletes excel in running, dribbling, throwing and more. However, they represent more than the sports they master and the classes they pass. In addition to their talent and intelligence, they are often exemplars of character and service within their communities. We honor them as they personify balance and do so in a way that merits praise.

However, excelling academically or athletically, as these women do, is not necessary to help them reach their potential. All it requires is taking some time out to walk Saturday morning. Maybe you can even assemble a team and walk together to raise money for this worthy cause.

An event such as this wouldn't be complete without winners and prizes. The team that raises the most money is presented the Kim Mothershead Award, named after Walk for Women's first chairperson. Mothershead died of cancer in 2012.

Walk for Women's website says, "Your contribution will not only be enhancing educational opportunities for our student-athletes -- you will be promoting leadership, discipline and teamwork for the development of our leaders of tomorrow."
