Margaret Mead is quoted as stating one should "never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." This can be seen in a local advocacy group, Authentic Voices, as the members work together to identify areas of improvement within their neighborhoods. Nearly a year ago, members of the group set their eyes on Indian Park as they explored opportunities close to their neighborhood for safe play and physical activity. Indian Park, while offering space to play basketball, gather for small events and a structure with a slide, lacked one of the most popular and expected staples of any play setting, swings. While a seemingly simple and non-consequential item, the group identified the lack of swings and, in particular, infant swings, as an opportunity for families with babies to also enjoy the park. Along with the absence of swings, the group identified a major safety concern with the parking being restricted on the north side of William St., closest to the park, causing families and children to have to cross William St. to access the park. With support from United Way of Southeast Missouri, members of Authentic Voices crafted a letter highlighting their safety concern and presented to the Cape Girardeau City Council. As a result, changes were made to the parking restrictions allowing parking, now, on both sides of the park. This celebratory moment gave the group momentum to continue its cause, requesting the city to consider adding swings to the park. Their voices were heard and, in recent weeks, Indian Park has seen a new addition of a swing set and another small play structure. Authentic Voices members continue their mission: using the unheard words of our community to empower us to forge pathways towards opportunities, self-sufficiency and solutions.
