Southeast returns home this weekend

The Southeast Missouri State University football team got off to a good start at home on Sept. 12 against rival Southern Illinois.

It was family weekend, and more than 8,000 people attended the matchup. Southeast won 27-24 with less than 6 seconds left on a field goal by Ryan McCrum.

The Redhawks (1-2) went on to lose a nail biter 29-28 against the nationally ranked Indiana State Sycamores last week.

The big news to come out of the matchup was Dante Vandeven's late-game offensive attack. The true freshmen led the Redhawks to three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. The effort received national attention, and the Jackson native was named the Football Championship Subdivision National Freshman of the Week by STATS.

The team returns to Houck Stadium on Saturday to face Shorter University. Kick off is at 1 p.m.

Saturday's game should be another fun atmosphere. Despite two losses, which include one to the University of Missouri of the Southeastern Conference, the Redhawks are playing with intensity. There is a renewed pride in the air from fans. That is exciting for Southeast and its proud alumni and fans.

We hope you consider attending the game on Saturday to root for the Redhawks.
