Southeast football opens at home on Saturday

It's a busy weekend for Southeast Missouri State University as friends and family come back to Cape Girardeau for Family Weekend. The weekend includes the university's first home football game.

The Redhawks football team kicked off its season on Saturday at the University of Missouri. Though they ultimately lost 34-3, the Redhawks, huge underdogs against a nationally ranked team, played tough on defense and the offense played its game conservatively, a move that was intentional by the coaches.

This week's opponent is a regional rival. The Southern Illinois Salukis will be at Houck Field at 6 p.m. Saturday.

It should be a great atmosphere.

One of the bright spots for Coach Tom Matukewicz's Redhawks team is senior Paul McRoberts. The talented receiver has an inspiring story from growing up in St. Louis to becoming an NFL prospect. You can read the coverage at semoball.com.

If you're a sports fan or want to support student athletes, make plans to attend the games this fall. For ticket information, visit gosoutheast.com or call 651-2113.

We wish the Redhawks football team and all of the university's fall sports teams much success this season.
