Cape County 4-Her's Compete at State Poultry Contest

Six Cape Girardeau county 4-H members competed in the 2015 State 4-H Poultry Contest Saturday, June 13 on the University of Missouri campus. Brent Seyer and Steven Peters competed in the Senior Judging Division, Dylan Knight, Dalton Seabaugh, and Alex Seyer competed in the Intermediate Judging Division, and Anna Ahrens competed in the Junior Judging Division.

Peters placed 3rd overall which qualifies him to compete at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in November. Brent Seyer placed 7th in the senior division. Alex Seyer was the high individual in the intermediate division with Seabaugh placing 2nd and Knight placing 5th. Ahrens was the high individual in the junior division. Renee Peters taught workshops on candling eggs and the exterior of eggs. John Peters, Jill Peters and Wanda Aufdenberg worked with the youth to prepare them for the contest.

The day included an egg contest where members brought in a dozen eggs from their flock to be judged, a poultry quiz bowl contest, and workshops. The topics covered in the workshops were poultry health, what makes a good egg, and integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) into the poultry project.

Missouri 4-H is a community of over 300,000 youth ages 5-18 from rural farming communities, suburban schoolyards, and urban neighborhoods. 4-H youth are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills, guided by over 10,000 caring adult volunteers statewide. University of Missouri Extension 4-H is the youth development program of the nation's Cooperative Extension system.
