Big Fourth planned in Cape, Jackson

In our American culture, little else is as patriotic as the Fourth of July.

It's a date that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and marks our birth as a nation separate from Great Britain. And although hundreds of years have passed since those auspicious early days of our Republic, we are reminded pointedly of that remarkable journey on this always-remarkable day.

In that spirit, the local area will celebrate Independence Day with a bang once again.

In Cape Girardeau, a larger-than-usual fireworks display is anticipated on July 4, along with performances by the Cape Municipal Band, a U.S. naturalization ceremony for 20 newly minted Americans and an annual recognition of the Southeast Missourian's Spirit of America Award winner. The 15- to 18-minute fireworks display will be held at 9:15 p.m. The event is planned at the riverfront, but stay tuned. Recent flooding may alter those plans.

Meanwhile, nearby Jackson plans to hold a day-long celebration at Jackson City Park culminating with fireworks. Festivities there will include food stands, pony rides, children's train rides and an inflatable bounce house.

But that by no means is all. Helicopter rides and a car, truck and motorcycle show are part of the mix as well. The car show is being sponsored by the Capaha Antique Car Club.
