HOPE for Alzheimer's Act

I recently had the honor of joining more than a thousand advocates in Washington D.C. for the Alzheimer's Association's Advocacy Forum. I met people from across the nation who are passionate about changing the future of Alzheimer's. They shared their personal stories, journeys and struggles with getting an appropriate diagnosis and the lack of guidance following the diagnosis.

Alzheimer's isn't just a disease. Alzheimer's is a long and tiring journey. The disease trajectory is lengthy, spanning 8 to 20 years following diagnosis. Families and loved ones devote their time and energy to provide support during this extensive journey, often without a plan that provides guidance and support.

Thankfully, the HOPE for Alzheimer's Act currently before Congress addresses this concern. The bill enables physicians to provide care planning, allowing newly diagnosed individuals and their caregivers to learn about medical and nonmedical treatments, clinical trials and support services available in the community.

While in Washington, I had the privilege to meet with Congressman Jason Smith and asked him to sign on as a co-sponsor for the HOPE for Alzheimer's Act. I encourage you to do the same. Reach out to Congressman Smith and urge him to support the HOPE for Alzheimer's Act so families can get the support with planning that they so desperately need.
