Cape downtown to celebrate sculptures tonight

In downtown Cape Girardeau, nothing says revitalization like the unique works of art that will be gracing points along Broadway for a second year.

Established in 2014 to complement the downtown area's continued renewal, the Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit will kick off its 2015 season this evening with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Vasterling Suites courtyard at the corner of Broadway and North Fountain Street.

Last year, about 100 people flocked to the inaugural celebration introducing seven winning pieces.

The new slate of sculptures was juried by members of the local Public Art Committee, which is made up of representatives from the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Old Town Cape, the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce and city government.

The seven artists selected to display their work this time around are Mike Baur of West Chicago, Illinois; Sarah Deppe of Madison, Wisconsin; Kurt Dyrhaug of Beaumont, Texas; James Johnson of Charleston, Illinois; Nathan Pierce of Cape Girardeau; and Stephanie Sailer and Bounnak Thammavong, both of Swisher, Iowa.

We wish these artists all the best with their exhibit and congratulate them for being chosen to help spur more arts-related activities downtown and elsewhere in the community. Please come out and support them tonight.

If you can't make it, be sure to check out their pieces next time you visit the downtown area.
