Food banks can use more than food

We have a number of groups that do important work in the area to feed the hungry. Providing this nourishment for those who have minimal resources is vital. But also important are the other things many take for granted.

A story in the Dec. 23 Southeast Missourian by Emily Priddy highlighted other ways people can help.

The Salvation Army said canned meats and boxed side dishes help with food boxes.

The Semo Food bank can use perishable and nonperishable food donations, and personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

The Safe House for Women has a list of items most needed. It can be found online at semosafehouse.org.

You can read more about the types of items needed by the groups in the story, which also is available at semissourian.com.

Think about the things that you use on a daily basis. Many are the same that these groups can use to help others.

Of course the best way to help is through monetary support. Not-for-profit organizations can stretch funds to provide the most value. Some also have tax credits available.

This community is a generous one. Many individuals, church groups and civic clubs provide help to organizations that directly meet basic needs for those struggling financially. We appreciate this and thank those who give their time and money to help.

We encourage you to consider how you can help those in need this year.
