(Jackson, MO) -- The Jackson R-2 School District recognizes National School Lunch Week on behalf of the School Nutrition Association, October 13-17, 2014. The theme, "Get in the Game with School Lunch" will feature events and activities that promote the importance of balancing healthy eating with physical activity and exercise.

National School Lunch Week will emphasize the healthy foods that are offered daily in the Jackson R-2 School District. Each of the 9 buildings in the district will host activities to celebrate healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. The coaching staff will assist in serving lunch at the junior high school as well as contests and writing opportunities to describe their favorite thing about school lunch in the elementary buildings.

"We love cooking healthy meals in a way that is delicious and nutritious, and the opportunity to give students fresh fruits and vegetables each day" said Ellen Gipson, Jackson R-2 School District Nutritional Coordinator, RDN, LD.

An average of 64% of students eat a school lunch each week. That number steadily increases as the year progresses. School lunches cost $2.50 for elementary and $2.75 for secondary. Menus are developed monthly by Gipson, a registered dietician, and Liz Aufdenberg, Food Service Director.

"Our meals are very affordable and it takes the stress and guesswork out of packing lunches each morning," said Gipson.

Students are excited to view school menus and to have a choice of items. Kindergarten student, Caden Rockwell, enjoys eating at school.

"I don't bring my lunch very often because I like eating at school," said Rockwell.

Other students look forward to specific menu favorites that are offered through the school lunch programs such as corn dogs, chicken nuggets, pizza, chef salad and fresh fruit.

"We love to eat pizza for school lunch," said Lynlee LaValle and Lola Mooty, Kindergarteners.

Healthy food is only part of the celebration week. Students are also encouraged to move through programs like "Movers and Improvers" at South Elementary where physical activity starts as soon as students arrive at school during specific times by encouraging moving on the playground. Outdoor activity such as sports and fun play are promoted in line with the "Get in the Game" theme for National School Lunch Week.
