It's election time: Register, learn, vote

We're less than a month away from another national election.

On Nov. 4, voters will be faced with several decisions, including the 8th Congressional District representative and a handful of other initiatives, including the hot-button Amendment 3 -- which addresses teacher performance and standardized testing -- and a local fire tax.

The Southeast Missourian will continue to cover the issues in the weeks leading up to election day. Already, videos from the recent candidate forum have been posted at semissourian.com/election.

A key date is coming up this week. Wednesday is the last day to register to vote in this election. If you're new to the area or have not voted in the past, you can learn more about how you can register by contacting your county clerk's office. Residents may also visit the Missouri Secretary of State's website to register to vote online.

We encourage you to vote, of course. But we implore you to become informed on the issues before doing so.

An active and educated voting populace is necessary for a healthy Republic.
