Former Cardinals pitcher to share testimony on Sunday

Many people have a hurt, habit or hang-up. Whether drug dependency, relationship challenges, alcoholism or another category, these are problems that can destroy lives of individuals and families.

There are programs, however, that can help people move forward and live a better life. Celebrate Recovery is one of those programs.

Offered by St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Celebrate Recovery is a 12-step, faith-based program that has been around for 20 years. St. Andrew has offered it for six years.

The annual picnic and worship service connected with Celebrate Recovery will be held on Sunday. Fellowship and games for children begin at 4:30 p.m.; the dinner starts at 5 p.m.; and former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes will speak at the worship service at 6 p.m. The church is located at 804 N. Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.

Benes has shared his testimony to area groups in the past. His path from a highly paid baseball player to becoming a Christian and a better husband and father is compelling and gives hope to many.

Joanne Erlbacher, women's ministry leader at St. Andrew, said all are welcome to attend.

"He is a sports figure, and young people look up to them for their talent and all the notoriety they get, and I just think it would be good for young people to come ..." Erlbacher said in a Southeast Missourian story. "Everybody has their struggles, even people that are put up on pedestals. Life is life; it's no different for anybody else, nor is getting help and realizing you do need help."

Thank you to St. Andrew Lutheran Church and other churches in the area who offer Celebrate Recovery and other, similar programs.

Andy Benes has a great platform to share his faith, and we appreciate his willingness to share his story. Consider attending the event on Sunday and hear an inspirational message.
